Tuesday, February 6, 2001 In today's show, Henry is threatened by both Emily and
Craig. We also find out whom Henry is really working for – Mae Lin! Emily is in her office at the Intruder, looking at a
picture of Craig and fantasizing about seeing him in prison. Henry barges
in and she tells him he needs to learn some manners, he should knock! He
tells her, "You need to learn to obey, that way we wouldn't run into these
problems." "Obey?" "Uh huh, and sit, and roll
over, and play dead if you're instructed to." Henry tells Emily that
she's gone over the budget. "Not my budget," she responds,
unconcerned. "Not your paper," retorts Henry. "It is
now," says Emily. Henry humors her and asks since when?
"Since I found out your indiscretion with a certain stallion goes all the
way to the top." This makes Henry nervous, but he pretends that he
doesn't understand. Emily says she knows he's playing games behind Craig's
back. Henry says that whatever it is she's thinking, she's got it all
wrong. Emily says that's fine, she'll just run it by Craig. Henry
doesn't like that either and says, "You know, Craig doesn't like games any
more than I do so why waste his time?" Emily tells him not to push her,
that from this moment on she's not taking orders from him, or Craig, or anyone!
Henry tells her she should run that one by Craig at the next editorial meeting.
Emily agrees that she has plenty to tell Craig and will do it at just the right
time, or better yet, "Read all about it on my next cover page."
"You wouldn't dare do that!" exclaims Henry. Emily observes that
he must not know her very well. He should get to know the people he works
with, like she did. She knows all about Craig and now she knows all about
Henry, too. Henry asks her what she knows, and she says she knows everything
that the police know, which is a lot more than Craig knows. "I think
this is what's referred to as the catbird seat," she says, gloating.
Henry is worried and tries to smooth things over, saying, "OK, all right,
listen. Listen to me. Whatever story that you have concocted, we can talk
about this." Emily doesn't think so, saying, "No, that's not
possible. You see, I'm finished talking. It's time for negotiating.
I wonder what Craig would say if he knew his faithful companion was keeping him
in the dark?" Henry tries to scare Emily away, saying Craig has
powerful connections and this could backfire on her. She's unimpressed and
goes to answer the ringing phone. It's Craig and she laughs and says,
"Speak of the devil!" Craig is calling to tell Emily that he's cutting her budget
and wants to pay their sources less. Emily protests, saying that's their
bread and butter. Craig says they need to lose some butter and make better
use of their assets. "You mean cover your assets," says Emily.
This sounds like running scared to her and that's not good business. Craig
tells her when she has her own business she can do what she wants. Emily
demands, "This arrogant, pompous lackey of yours, I want him gone."
Craig says she's in no position to be making demands. "Oh but I am in
a position to save your sorry butt, so I'd have to disagree with you."
"Emily, if any part of me was in need of saving, you are not the first
person I would call." "If you knew what I know," taunts
Emily. Henry, who has been listening to Emily's side of the conversation,
whispers, "Emily! Emily, do not do this!" Craig asks Emily
what she knows, and she tells him, "You give me what I want, and I'll give
you what you need." She asks him to sign over his part of the
Intruder, and in exchange she'll tell him where to find his missing money.
With that she hangs up the phone, and waves Henry "Buh-bye!" Craig goes over to the Intruder to ask Emily what she
knows, but she refuses to tell him more until he gives her the Intruder.
She does give him one hint, that the fortune he's looking for is right here in
Oakdale! Craig brings Henry back to his suite to talk. As they
come in the door Henry asks why they couldn't talk at the Intruder. Craig
responds, "I didn't want to demoralize the other employees. Why
should I subject them to watching me tear out your esophogus?" Henry
looks surprised and says, "Woah, wait, what did I, what did I do?"
"On the other hand, a little ritual sacrifice might be encouraging, you'd
get what you deserve." Henry asks what he did, and Craig says he
didn't do his job. Henry protests, saying, "I have done everything you have
asked of me." "Then explain Emily Stewart." "There's
not a man around, well, there's not a man alive who can do that!"
Craig asks Henry if he knows that Emily is trying to blackmail him. Henry
feigns surprise, saying, "You have got to be kidding me!" Craig
says Emily will tell him where to find his missing money if he gives her back
the paper. Does Henry know anything about that? Why would he know,
why would he care? Henry says as long as he has a job he doesn't care who
the owner is. "Don't bite the hand that signs your paycheck,
Henry." Henry asks what else Emily said, and Craig says she thinks
his money is hidden in Oakdale. Henry asks, "Did she say where?
No, of course she didn't. Here you are, you're cutting her budget, you've
threatened her authority, her boy toy's job is on the line. We are dealing
with a very spiteful, very vindictive woman. Someone who will say and do
anything to hold onto that paper. You remember when you brought me on, the
fight she put up? The slightest threat to her territory, she strikes out like a
queen cobra." Craig wonders why Emily would claim to know anything
about his private finances, and Henry stammers, "I don't know, I don't
know. How should I know? I don't know anything!" Craig
charges at him, chewing an apple and yelling, "Because that's why I pay
you, Henry, to know something! Tell me how you're earning your keep.
Tell me what you know!" Henry tries apologizing, saying,
"Listen, if I have somehow done anything, accidentally, inadvertently,
purely by chance, to disappoint you, tell me how and it will never happen again.
What do you want me to do about Emily?" Craig tells him, "Find
out what Emily knows. Because I believe I'd have to say your life depends
on it." Henry nods and leaves. In the next scene Henry gets into a car with someone whom we cannot see. He says to this person, "It's about time. Do you have any idea what I've been dealing with? Emily Stewart is onto us. And if someone doesn't make that harpie happy really fast, she is threatening to publish everything. Is that what you want? When Montgomery finds out his money is on the hoof, we are dead. Now look, you got me into this insanity, you find a way to get rid of this four-legged fortune before it costs us everything!" The driver of the car says, "remember who you work for, Coleman, I call the shots." It's Mae Lin! She asks him, "Don't you know how dangerous it is for a man who knows too much to lose his nerve?" Henry says, "When the horse hockey hits the fan, it won't be evenly distributed, that much I know!" Mae Lin says she doesn't want to be disappointed, that Phillips insisted he was dependable. Henry says he just did Phillips a favor by stealing the horse show tape. Yes, for a handsome fee, Mae Lin reminds him. "I am never gonna live that down, am I?" Mae Lin tells him to stop worrying, that nothing will happen because they won't let it. She reminds Henry that he has been keeping an eye on Craig for her, and for a piece of the action. Yes, says Henry, but "I did not sign on for a jail term." Mae Lin responds that sometimes we get more than we bargain for, and that he loves the excitement. "Yeah, I love my freedom and my life a whole lot more." Mae Lin tries to reassure him, Craig doesn't know she's in the country, and the new owner of the horse is ready to take possession. Henry asks what the next stop is, and Mae Lin says they wait for the perfect time to appropriate the horse from the farm. "Simple as that?" asks Henry doubtfully. "Yes, simple as that," says Mae Lin confidently.
