Monday, February 23, 2004 Today Henry's little plan to get Mike and Katie back together plays out, and he's there to pick up the pieces when it fails. Mike is at Katie's cottage, fixing the water heater that Henry broke to get them together. Katie walks in to find Mike standing in her living room, having just taken off his soaking wet shirt. "Mike - what are you doing here? With your shirt off?" asks Katie. "Relax, all right. I'm not here for any other reason than to fix your water heater, okay?" answers Mike defensively. Katie asks him what's wrong with it, and Mike tells her he got an emergency call from Henry. On cue, Henry comes downstairs with a sweatshirt for Mike (that does not look like it came out of his closet). "Well, this should do the trick. Here you go, man, keep it as long as you..." he sees that Katie has come home and grabs his coat. "Okay, thanks, I'll see you soon. I appreciate it. Thanks a lot." Henry heads for the door and Katie asks him what he's done. "What? There was really something wrong with the hot water heater. I mean, at least there is now. And, uh, you know - you know how delicate these things are. Tell her, Mike. You know, when things don't heat up the way they used to, you've gotta give 'em a nudge. You gotta kick it into gear. First it simmers, and then it starts to boil," explains Henry. "Why am I telling you kids this? You know what to do, so I'm just gonna give you your space. All right?" says Henry as he tries to leave again. Katie asks him what he did to the water heater. "Nothing," he answers, "That can't be fixed by Mike. It's like I always used to say, you know, 'if Mike can't fix it, it ain't broke.' So work your magic, Mike, all right?" "I can't believe you," says Katie, frustrated. "All right, fine. It was a cheap trick, I admit it. But I had to do something extreme to get you two face-to-face. And now that you are, why don't you try to warm things up a little bit around here, okay?" Henry leaves them alone to work things out. After a few angry words, some broken glass, and a discussion with Snickers, Katie and Mike have pretty much decided this is goodbye. Henry comes home with a bag of groceries and sees them together. "Mike! You're still here. Okay, just pretend you never saw me. I'll be out of here in just a second, and you kids can get back to whatever it is you were doing. All right?" Mike tells him it's OK, he was just leaving. "What? Well, don't rush off on my account, man," says Henry. "Hey, tell you what, man. Next time something breaks around here, call a plumber. Okay? I'll see you, Katie," says Mike as he leaves. "He's not leaving leaving, right? He's gonna be back, right?" asks Henry. "Oh, it's no use," sighs Katie. Henry asks if this means she doesn't hate him anymore. "No, I do. I hate Simon for leaving. I hate Mike for being so - Mike. And I hate you!" she says. Henry asks what he did, and Katie answers, "You brought him here. You made me remember what it was like to be with him when things were good with us. When I could just look into his eyes and know exactly what he was thinking - hours together felt like minutes. And those minutes weren't enough. But it's never going to be right between us again. I just miss my stupid husband, and I miss my stupid best friend. And if I can't be with either of them, then fine. Forget it. Who needs them, right? They can just walk out of my life. Like I was never even there. Like we never existed," says Katie dejectedly. Henry hugs her and tells her he's sorry. "I didn't want to make you cry. I just - I don't know. I thought, by luring Mike here, I could - I don't know. It was a stupid idea, all right? I just - I just wanted to do the right thing," explains Henry. "I know. But there is no right thing. Nothing is ever, ever going to make it right. Unless - what did you get at the grocery store?" she asks, brightening. "Ice cream. Lots and lots of ice cream," answers Henry. "Good. Go get us two spoons. Oh, it's going to be a long, long night," says Katie as she grabs a blanket and flops down on the couch. Henry gives her a kiss on the head on his way to the kitchen. Today’s episode was directed by Maria Wagner and written by Lynn Martin.
