Thursday, July 22, 2004 The day has arrived for Henry's big "date" with Nikki. Or so he thinks. Henry follows Mike walk into the police station, calling, " Wait, wait, wait." " What now?" asks Mike impatiently. " I had a poppy seed bagel for breakfast," says Henry, baring his teeth. " Your teeth are fine," says Mike, barely looking. " Okay, there's nothing less appealing than a smile peppered with poppy seeds," observes Henry. " I'll try to remember that," says Mike. " And how's my cologne?" asks Mike. " You're asking the wrong guy," says Mike. " What are you wearing?" asks Henry, leaning in to smell. " What am I wearing?" asks Mike, backing away. " What is it, musk, musk and more musk?" asks Henry. " Okay, you get any closer, I'll swear out a complaint," Mike threatens his buddy. " One more thing, she's mine, you understand? Okay? We get to the Lakeview, you suddenly remember that you have to level a deck or deck a level or whatever it's going to take to get you and your musky tools outta there," says Henry. Mike agrees. " What can I do for you boys?" asks Hal helpfully. " Nothing. Not a thing. We're just browsing," says Henry guiltily. Mike says they're here to pick up Nikki, and Hal tells them she signed out a while ago. "But, what? We have a date. She promised," whines Henry. " Well, I wouldn't know about that," says Hal. Henry asks where she went. " Beats me. But, maybe she stood you up because of that cologne -- or whatever it is you've got between your teeth. It looks like poppy seeds or something," says Hal. Henry gives Mike a dirty look. Henry and Mike go to Yo's to drown their sorrows. " She stood me up on our first date," mourns Henry. " It wasn't exactly a date, Henry. We were just supposed to hang out together," Mike corrects him. " Well, it would've been. As soon as you left," says Henry. Mike offers to buy Henry a beer and play some pool, " It's better than going home and staring at the walls." " Yeah, the cottage is so empty with Katie gone. But who needs 'em, anyway, huh? As long as we've got each other," says Henry. " And a big glass of vodka, with just a stern look at the vermouth," he adds. Suddenly they become aware of the crowd by the pool tables. It's pool shark Nikki: " Pay up, big guy. Unless you want go again." Henry pulls out a chair for Nikki as they sit down at a table. " Sorry, you guys. I had the worst day at work, I completely forgot we had plans. Forgive me?" says Nikki. " What? What? Forgive you? What is to forgive? Here we are, you and me -- it must be fate. Kismet," says Henry. " It's not a problem," says Mike simply. " And, you know, if you need someone to talk to, I am a great listener," offers Henry. " Actually, what I need is another drink. You mind, Howard? The bartender knows what I'm drinking," says Nikki. Disappointed, Henry goes to the bar. " Henry is a good guy," says Mike. "He really is. Look, I went through some stuff a while back with a good friend of his. Anyway, I gave her a hard time. I was wrong about a lot of things. And he really stuck by her. I owe him a lot." Nikki asks where the friend is now. " In Australia with her husband. Anyway, I'd really appreciate it if you gave him another chance," says Mike. " For you, anything. Only I can't," responds Nikki. " It's my last night in Oakdale. I leave town tomorrow morning." "DC's a nice place to visit," says Mike diplomatically. Nikki complains that her job is not what she expected, looking at a computer screen all day instead of being a supercop like her dad. "That's why this case was so important to me. It was my one chance to prove myself in the field, and I blew it," she says. Mike says he doesn't believe it, and Nikki says, "I lost the suspect. Trust me, it's over. They're gonna stick me back behind that computer screen. 'Here lies Nikki Munson, she died of boredom.'" Mike suggests she quit her job and work for her dad. "Don't think I haven't thought about it. But losing that suspect hasn't exactly endeared me to the Oakdale PD. Unless I want to make shakes at Al's diner, I don't think there's much hope for me here," says Nikki. Henry comes back with the drinks, "A martini for me, some domestic swill for you and JD for the lovely little lady." "Thank you, Henry," says Nikki. "You remembered my name," says Henry delightedly. "Don't look at me," Mike says humbly. "I was just teasing you before. I know your name. And I know that you're a very supportive guy," says Nikki. "Yeah, that's me. Supportive. I'm glad you noticed," says Henry. "So, tell me. Do you play poker? I mean, you must. Obviously, such a pool shark," says Henry. Nikki says she played a little in college. "Yeah, right. And you only drove the car on Sundays, right? Well, I'm willing to take a chance, bet my shirt and anything else. What do you say we find a nice little quiet place and a deck of cards, hmm?" offers Henry. Nikki is trying to decline politely when she's saved by the ringing of her cell phone. After she leaves to answer it Henry says to Mike, "Well, I knew she'd go for me if she was given half a chance. By the way, I think it's about time you had that emergency we discussed." Meanwhile, on the phone, Hal tells Nikki that Jack caught Starziak and is bringing him in. She goes back to the table and tells the guys she has to go. "What about our game?" asks Henry. "I'm sorry," says Nikki as she runs out of the bar, leaving Henry alone and disappointed again. Today’s episode was directed by John O'Connell and written by Elizabeth Page.
