Wednesday, October 24, 2007 Maddie tells Henry and Vienna that she's decided to go to Wesleyan. With part of their family leaving, Henry and Vienna talk about starting a family of their own... someday. Today’s episode was directed by Habib Azar and written by Richard Culliton.
Transcripts from TVMegasite Vienna: Now I know why the waitresses were always so cranky here. Henry: You don't have to wear stilettos, you know. Vienna: Oh, wonderful. Not only do I work in a diner, but I get to wear orthopedic shoes. What’s next? A hair net? Or a uniform made out of polyester? Henry: Hey, I've got an idea. How about when we get home, I give you a nice foot massage. Vienna: Ooh, but I love my life. And I love my job. Henry: You've got the cutest mood swings in the whole wide world, you know that? Vienna: Oh, Madeline! Henry: Hey! Vienna: Where are you going? Maddie: Sorry, I didn't want to intrude. Henry: Please. Vienna: Come on, sit down and talk to us. We haven't seen you in ages. Maddie: If by ages you mean since this afternoon. Henry: We were just about to have something to eat. Maddie: No, you weren't -- Vienna: Come on, talk to us and tell us everything that has happened since lunch. Maddie: Well, nothing's happened. It's just -- I think it's time I finally make a decision.
Henry: What's up? Maddie: I called Wesleyan today. And I spoke to the registrar. Henry: And? Maddie: And they said that I can transfer mid-semester. And I can still keep my scholarship. Henry: What? That's great! Maddie: Yeah. Vienna: We are both so proud of you. Maddie: Yeah, I just -- I have to make a really quick decision. And so it's either now, or a year from now. Henry: Sheesh, that's pressure. Maddie: Yeah. Want to know what I decided? I decided that I'm really bad about deciding. I dated Noah because Casey dumped me. And then I didn't go to Wesleyan because Noah asked me not to. And than when I found out that Noah was gay, now I'm saying that I want to go to Wesleyan -- why? Henry: Because it's a great school, and has everything you're looking for. Maddie: Yeah, or maybe I'm just really embarrassed, and I want to run away. I don't know why I do the things I do. Vienna: Good! I mean that shows that you're young, and that's wonderful. I mean, like, you're young in age, but you have a young heart. And Wesleyan is an adventure. And, we're going to miss you like hell. Henry: Like hell. Maddie: One thing, I know for sure. If I do go to Wesleyan? Henry: Yeah? Maddie: Nobody is going to have as much fun as I will at parents' weekend.
Vienna: Are you testing me again? Because that's an easy one. That's a root beer float. Henry: No -- Vienna: What? Don't try to fool me, Henry, because I have learned every single name of all the traditional American drinks. Henry: Taste. Vienna: That's not root beer. Henry: No, it's not. It's cola. And you stick a little vanilla in there and you got yourself a black cow. Vienna: A black cow -- and you make fun of the way I talk? Henry: Have some more. Vienna: Delicious. Henry: Yeah it is. I made one of these for Maddie’s fifth birthday. She was in awe. She said I rocked! Vienna: She still thinks that. Henry: Then why is she leaving me? Vienna: She has to spread her wings! We knew this would happen sometime. Henry: Yeah, I knew that, but I was getting used to having her around. Vienna: I know. It feels like I'm losing a sister too. Henry: She's the only real family I've got left here in Oakdale. The only reasonably sane family I have here. What am I -- I'm sorry, what am I going on about, your family is like, what 4,000 miles away? Vienna: You know, if you want more relatives around, there's something we can do about that? Henry: Oh, yeah? What's that? Vienna: Starting a family of our own.
Henry: This cleanser isn't going to cut it. I'm going to have to get something more industrial strength. Vienna: No, no, you're not you're going to tell me what I said that scared you so much that you go into hide in the supply closet. Henry: I -- just this whole making a family thing. It just sort of came out of left field. Vienna: What? Henry: So, you think we should be married first? I -- look, I can barely take care of me and you, and this pleasure palace that we have I can't be responsible for anything else. Vienna: Are you sure that's all? Henry: Yeah, what else could it be? Vienna: I don't know, maybe -- maybe you don't think I will be a good mother. Henry: Honey, you would put all other mothers to shame. Those Swedish cookies in the lunchbox -- the kid would be the most popular one in school. I love you. I love you, and I would be so blessed to have a child with you -- one day, just not this very second. Vienna: Good answer. Henry: Thank God! Vienna: I'm going to go into the kitchen, and make Madeleine a farewell cake. Henry: But she hasn't said that she's leaving yet? Vienna: Yes, she has.
Maddie: Well, maybe things are picking up a little. Henry: Oh, yeah? Maddie: Yeah, this is the first time all night that I haven't walked in on an intimate moment. Tell you what, it makes you feel like what the French call de trop. Henry: Are you going to keep studying French at Wesleyan? Maddie: You're so sure I'm going? Why? Henry: Because it's a smart, gutsy thing to do and you do smart, gutsy things. Maddie: Yes, well, are you sure it's not because I just walked in on my boyfriend with his boyfriend having a very private moment? Henry: No. Maddie: Yeah, I guess it's not the worst thing that can happen to you. Henry: Not by a long shot, Sweetheart. Maddie: Well, to be honest, it's a little disconcerting, but -- Noah. He has a boatload of problems. And then I see him and Luke together, and something just seems right. And makes me see once and for all that Noah and I are never going to have that. It's not that I don't have what I want. But I think I just need to go someplace else to find what I want. Henry: Wesleyan maybe? Maddie: Yeah, well, I hope so. And if it's not then -- Vienna: Well, you make another move. And another. If you have to. Maddie: Right. Until I have what you guys have. Henry: That's right. A diner that hemorrhages money? Maddie: Knowing that you didn't give up until you got what you really wanted. Henry: You know what I think? I think there's this guy at Wesleyan. Good looking guy -- Vienna: Very, very rich -- Maddie: Is he straight? Henry: And he's good to his momma. And right now he has no idea that he's about to become the luckiest guy in the world.
Maddie: Wow, you guys were so sure I was going. Vienna: Yup. Maddie: Okay, one thing. All this talk about the good-looking, rich straight guy -- I'm going to Wesleyan to find myself. Not to find some boy. Vienna: Yes. Maddie: And that's what's going to make you simply irresistible. What's going on Vienna? Vienna: I'm sorry? Maddie: Why? Vienna: You kept saying that we're looking for what made us happy. And I'm happy, but it's not just because of Henry. I am a part of a family. A wonderful family. So, thank you. Henry: Um, okay, somebody say something like really funny, or mean really fast. Maddie: Okay, okay -- I got it. I love you. I love you both. And I'm really going to miss you. Henry: That wasn't it.
