Thursday, October 30, 2003 Henry delivers the good news to Katie - she's off the hook for Mike's hit and run, and Nancy Hughes is on the hook! Katie
is at Mike's cottage, taking care of him. The doorbell rings and Katie
answers the door; it's Henry. He says hello to Katie, then spies Mike
lying on the couch. "Hey, hey, buddy, how are you?" he asks
sympathetically. "You're looking better. You are. And I'm
sorry to drop in on you like this." He tells Katie, "Yeah, see,
the thing is we've got this thing out at the cottage." "What
thing?" asks Katie. "Oh, a thing - a messy thing. Yeah,
and I think we might need, like, an exterminator or something like that, 'cause
it's under the porch. It's in the garbage. It's - ah, what am I
doing here?" says Henry, looking at Mike. "I'm bothering you
with the tales of the varmints out at the old homestead. Why don't you and
I step outside and talk about it, and we can leave this poor guy in peace,
huh?" Katie agrees and Henry tells Mike, "You're looking good.
You're looking a lot better." They go outside the cottage and Katie
asks what's going on. "Give me that thousand-watt smile," says
Henry. "What?" wonders Katie. "Come on, come
on. Give it to me, give it to me." Katie smiles a big, fake
smile. "There it is. I love it, I love it. You're out of
the woods, peaches. The cops have someone else on the hook for Mike's
hit-and-run." Shocked, Katie asks who it is. "Oh, it's
just someone that we all know and love and whose name you will never guess in a
million years," says Henry cryptically. "What? Nancy Hughes? They wanna blame dear, sweet Nancy Hughes?" asks Katie. "Mm-hmm. Our squeaky-clean, beloved matriarch herself," answers Henry. Katie protests that Nancy is a friend of hers and was always good to her and Simon. "I know, I know. But, Katie, what's the worst that's gonna happen here? Huh? They yank her license. They check her eyes. And they give her a fine. She goes home," rationalizes Henry. Katie says that's not fair. "Fair? Katie, she's the D.A.'s grandmother. They're not even gonna slap her boney little wrists," says Henry. "No, I can't have her license taken away from her!" says a guilty Katie. "Yes, you can. Yes, you can. People her age should not be behind the wheel. All right? She is a hit-and-run waiting to happen," says Henry, justifying it. Katie protests that Nancy is a good driver. "Oh, come on. Have you read the papers? Have you looked at the stats? Old people are mowing folks down all the time, all right? Now, wait - don't get all ethical on me here. Okay? You have two options. Jail, huh? Or we pull the wheels out from underneath someone who could easily mobilize this entire town to drive her wherever she wants to go," says Henry. Still not sure about it, Katie says she'll think about it. "No, no, no. Don't think. Okay? Stash your scruples and let the old broad take the fall. All right? I'm out of here. Congratulations and good luck," says Henry as he leaves her to go back to Mike. Katie decides to go down to the police station to keep Nancy from being blamed for the accident. She rushes into the interrogation room to insist that Nancy would never do that. Fortunately Nancy has an alibi, but Margo wonders why Katie is so concerned. She goes out to the cottage to question her about it. Today’s episode was directed by Steven Williford and written by Judith Donato.
